How to Find and Seal Drafts Around Your Doors
A drafty door can make a room feel uncomfortable even when the heating or cooling is on. Before replacing the door, check where air is getting through. A door sweep, weatherstripping, or threshold seal may help close the gap.
Find the Source of the Draft
Close the door and look for visible light around its edges. On a windy day, you may also feel air moving near the bottom or along the sides. Check whether the door closes evenly and whether the existing seals are cracked, flattened, or missing.
Check the Bottom of the Door
If air enters beneath the door, measure the gap between the door and the threshold. A door sweep attaches to the door, while a threshold seal sits at the floor. Choose a product that covers the gap without making the door difficult to open or close.
Inspect the Sides and Top
Weatherstripping helps seal the space between the door and its frame. Measure the length you need and check how much space is available when the door is closed. The seal should make contact with the door without preventing the latch from engaging.
Clean the Surface Before Installation
Dust and old adhesive can keep a new seal from staying in place. Remove worn material, clean the installation area, and follow the instructions for the product you choose. After installation, open and close the door several times to make sure it moves and latches properly.
